J C Smale

Blueprinting the future by capturing the spirit of the past.

Nearing six decades of operation, J C Smale was undergoing significant transition – not one but five second-generation family members were exiting day-to-day operations, and entrusting their legacy beyond the Smale name.

Celebrating 60 Years preserves the achievements, recollections and images that inform the business’s special culture. Jack Smale’s humble beginnings as a purveyor of second-hand gearboxes has grown into a mainstay of the Melbourne engineering community.

The book documents the journey at home and abroad – from a close connection with the local technical school, to adventures in the US and Russia.

Its diversity of expertise is laid out with featured projects for brickworks and fuel tanks in Europe, steelworks and waste processing in Asia, and ore grinding mills and light rail in Australia.

Restored photos and archival artefacts capture the enterprising spirit of the company for its next iteration.
